This blog is for anyone who entered the field of education believing that they would make a difference. I’ll call you “The Dreamers”. Dreamers majored in liberal arts, English and education. Some Dreamers like myself even majored in business or mass media. We all at one point or another shared the desire to make meaningful change in the world. We saw the race and socio-economic status based inequities and were outraged. We knew we could make an impact. Truth is….folks have been fighting for this very thing since Brown v. Board of Ed and not much has changed. One could argue that conditions are even worst. I’m one of those folks.
This blog will focus on the real reasons why this inequity persists despite the best and well-intentioned efforts of The Dreamers. The backdrop is Chicago, a city that is mired in corruption, controversy and sob stories. But don’t let that distract you. The truth is much messier than even CNN would lead you to believe. But don’t let that deter you. This blog will speak truth to power and encourage an honest discussion about the state of urban education and how we continue to fail the most vulnerable.
In the words of a great poet named Tupac, “We ain’t meant to survive cause it’s a setup and even though you’re fed up, you gotta keep ya head up.”
